In Search of a Creative Space
On the 22nd we will have the chance read what seems to be a very interesting manuscript on paradoxical tensions and how those can be managed. The manuscript is titled, “In search of a creative space: A conceptual framework of bridging paradoxical demands via design thinking” and it is written by Medhanie and Nils.
Abstract: This paper is about innovating firms and their ability to deal with paradoxes. These paradoxes are conceptualized as contradictory, yet interrelated organizational elements such as exploitation and exploration and it explores the inherent tension of accommodating such elements simultaneously. With the aim of increasing an understanding of the paradoxical tensions, it provides a conceptual basis from which the paradoxical tensions can be approached and managed. Specifically, we use design thinking as an organizational design perspective and conceptualize what we call a symmetric organizational form. This perspective, we believe, provides an alternative of how paradoxes in innovating organizations can be conceptualized and tensions managed.
