On Sociological Theories of the Middle Range
For the upcoming seminar, we will focus on a sociological classic, “On Sociological Theories of the Middle Range” by Professor Robert K. Merton. The essay was originally published in 1949.
Professor Merton (July 4, 1910 – February 23, 2003) was a esteemed Columbia University sociologist, and one of America’s trailblazers in the social sciences. He is the founder of a variety of structural functionalism and a prolific contributor to the conceptual and theoretical resources of several sociological dub-disciplines. In 1994, Merton became the first sociologist to receive a National Medal of Science and his son, the economist Robert C. Merton, won a Nobel Prize in 1997.
